Course Description: Theoretical approaches and personal, client, and population strategies for developing and maintaining health-related physical activity and associated behaviors.

Raquel's Course Reflection:

Exercise and Nutritional Sciences 434, otherwise known as Promoting Physical Activity and Healthy Eating, was one of the few ENS classes required for nutrition students. This course covered theoretical frameworks for integrating physical activity and nutrition in developing, implementing, and evaluating multicomponent interventions. These multicomponent interventions were aimed in increasing healthy patterns and behaviors in a variety of population subgroups.

The structure of this course was very different than the type of structure I am used to following in my previously taken nutrition classes. We were required to sign up for an online application called “TopHat” where homework assignments were completed, and various quizzes following the lectures were administered. I thought utilizing TopHat was useful for us students because we immediately applied what we learned in lecture and received immediate feedback on our performance and understanding of the concepts.

There were two large, heavily weighed projects assigned throughout the semester. One was a debate, the other was developing a new and innovative product. I would change these two assignments or completely wipe them out only because successfully executing a group project within a 500 lecture hall, felt seemingly impossible. Also, considering that I am not an ENS student, I did not think the material was too complicated, but I did think that the style in which the material was taught was confusing. However, I was very impressed with the guest speakers and found the rapport and motivational pyramid lectures to be the most intriguing of the material.
