Raquel's Course Reflection:

Nutrition Throughout the Life Span has been one of my favorite nutrition classes thus far here at SDSU. I personally feel that I have learned the greatest amount of material in Nutrition 304, in comparison to my other courses because of my growing engagement in the subject. As outlined in the syllabus, I learned about nutrition affecting preconception, nutrition during pregnancy, throughout lactation, nutrition for infants, toddlers, preadolescents, adolescents, adults, and nutrition for the elders. This class served as the foundation in regards to the knowledge I have obtained and will apply to my profession as a future Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. This course helped introduce me to the various age groups I may work with in the future. For instance, I specifically want to pursue a career working with mothers and infants, or mothers during pregnancy. Without a doubt, this course also helped reassure my passion in pursuing my bachelor’s degree in nutrition.

The one assignment that stood out to me was the Meal Plan project. This project was both a pain and a pleasure to complete. At first I feared this project and was afraid my group and I would not be able to deliver or execute the assignment. This project was in fact a lot of work. My group and I spend every weekend together from the day the assignment was given, to the day it was due. My team worked extremely well together. We had no knowledge of one another prior to this project, however we grew to become great friends. Overall, the Meal Plan project has grown to be my favorite assignment because that was the first time I had ever attempted to create an individualized meal plan for another person. The work my partners and I dedicated and invested into this project reminded me of the type of hard work I invest into my degree every single day. This was one of the first times I was challenged in a way that allowed me to utilize the skills I have obtained from San Diego State and apply it to the profession I am pursing.

The layout in which this course was taught did help me better understand the material. Because Professor Copp instructed via PowerPoint presentations, I was encouraged to record every lecture. Recording every lecture enabled me to take notes during class and revisit my notes after class in order to clarify any discrepancies. Being able to hear the material twice worked in my favor and helped me be more successful in this course. Lastly, I have had the privilege of having Linda Copp as my professor for two consecutive semesters and I sincerely appreciate and admire her passion for the subject and her desire to help her students grow and develop as health professionals. Her work, enthusiasm, and passion for her class deserves to be recognized.
