Course Name: Nutrition and Community Health (3)

Two lectures and three hours of activity.

Course Description: Nutritional problems in the community with consideration of their resolution. Field placement experience required.

Raquel's Course Reflection:

SDSU’s Nutrition and Community Health course (Nutrition 510) covers nutritional problems in the community with consideration of potential resolution. This class covered important topics that closely tied into many public health parallels. Lectures were straightforward and not complicated in any sort. Along with lectures, there was a field placement that was satisfied by a WIC volunteer assignment. This WIC volunteership has been the most rewarding experience for my personal and professional development as a DPD student.

 

Prior to Nutrition 510, I exclusively envisioned myself working closely with clinical nutrition. I had not stopped to imagine myself working in a community setting such as WIC. Surprisingly, I completely fell in love with my experience and had my entire perspective regarding my nutritional interests shift. I had the opportunity of observing nutrition counselling sessions, observing community held classes, and taught my very first class to WIC participants. My interests in studying breastfeeding was not only enhanced, but an interest in pursuing lactation consulting was developed.   

 

This class successfully served as a capstone class for me and my entire undergraduate experience as a foods and nutrition student. I have only positive comments to share and pass forward to future nutrition students enrolling in Nutrition 510.
