Raquel's Course Reflection:

This Medical Nutrition Therapy II Laboratory (Nutrition 409) is a two hour weekly class that satisfied specific requirements for the Didactic Program in Dietetics. This course overall encompassed advanced practical experience in food service and medical nutrition therapy for aspiring future dietitians. Class meetings typically involved meeting at remote locations such as a hospital, clinical office, school district, or perhaps an eating disorder clinic.

These various field trips were definitely one in a lifetime experience for me as a DPD student. I am grateful for the free opportunities to tour clinics, to speak with practicing dietitians first hand, and for being able to observe, listen, and learn about unique experiences from the different professionals I had the pleasure of meeting.

My favorite visit was DaVita, the dialysis clinic. I had never heard of a dialysis dietitian prior to enrolling in Nutrition 409. I had also never imagined myself performing such work once I obtained my license. For various reason, I was narrowed and focused in only on clinical nutrition in a hospital setting. But I was greatly inspired by the work the dietitians performed for dialysis patients and the vast power and knowledge they hold among other professionals.

I was overall more than satisfied with the types of paths I learned I can pursue as a dietitian. I am grateful for this class and for observing first hand the various opportunities I can widen my perspective to, once I obtain my license. I would not change anything about the structure of this class because I believe it is critical for all nutrition students to experience what I had the opportunity of experiencing in this course.
