Raquel's Course Reflection:
The laboratory section of Advanced Nutrition (Nutrition 302L) allowed us Nutrition students to apply what we learned in lecture with hands on activities and experiments. Our different sections met twice per week for an average of 2.5 hours each class meeting. The course objectives involved applying and evaluating several techniques to assess nutritional status. Such assessments included basic experimental methods, as well as researching various animal and human studies.
My colleagues and I were able to practice various applications using lab equipment. The semester long applications that we conducted as a class involved testing and analyzing our own blood samples. For instance, if the week’s topic covered Hemoglobin then a lecture covering the functions and nutritional significance of Hemoglobin would be taught, biochemical tests using our own blood samples would be performed, followed by an NCP note. The NCP (Nutrition Care Process) is an important documentation process that we were required to practice after each case study assigned. These case studies and NCP notes were constantly assigned throughout the semester to allow us students to practice and perfect our nutrition documentation.
I am grateful for this class and the various requirements and experiments that we were able to conduct. These hands on applications were the first of their kind that allowed me to test the knowledge I have learned in lecture. Overall, this class gave me an immense amount of confidence for working within the laboratory. I highly value the techniques I learned in this course and I am very confident that the abilities I was taught will carry me a long way in my nutrition career.
