Raquel's Course Reflection:
Medical Nutrition Therapy Part 1(Nutrition 406) and Part 2 (Nutrition 408) encompasses medical nutrition therapy for various chronic diseases. Nutrition 406 is a prerequisite for 408 and dwells into nutrition assessments, nutritional diagnosis, and the pathophysiology of the chronic disease. Nutrition 408 also covers concepts and principles of disease pathophysiology, nutrition assessments and medical nutrition therapy approaches for specific disease. However, 406 must be completed prior to enrolling in 408. Prior to learning the material, my preconceived notions of the class ensured me that I was going to fall in love with the material, which is exactly what happened.
Learning about the MNT for specific diseases and conditions reinforced my passion of clinical nutrition and my interest in pursuing my Registered Dietitian license. The material taught in the course was straightforward, interactive, relevant, and rewarding to learn. Yumi’s teaching style for both MNT 1 and 2 kept me engaged and on my toes throughout the entire semester. I enjoyed completing case studies after each chapter because it forced us to implement what we learned throughout lessons and apply our nutritional assessment techniques on situational patients.
Overall, MNT helped boost my confidence and encourage me to believe far more in my capabilities of becoming a successful dietetic intern. I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I am obtaining as a student in the future hands on experiences I will encounter as an intern and registered dietitian.
