Raquel's Course Reflection:

This specific Cultural Aspects of Foods and Nutrition course (Nutrition 203) is a prerequisite lower division Foods and Nutrition class that all first year students are required to take. This course is usually offered and recommended to be completed cohesively with Nutrition 201. This class has been particularly interesting because of its coverage on regional and ethnic influences on food and food culture.

This course widened my perspective on the vast cultural differences that exists amongst people around the globe. Nutritional habits that I participate in every single day may be vastly different than my professor’s, my neighbors, or even my best friend’s. The way I view, value, prepare, and consume food may be completely different and unique. I found it intriguing to learn about about certain cultures, their habits, their preferences, their dietary patterns, and their relationship with food.

I thought the structure and overall execution of the class was great. The material was straightforward, not tricky, and overall useful and interesting. I was engaged throughout the entire course and enjoyed learning about social cues, respect, and communication skills in relation to food.

A large portion of the lectures involved covering proper manners and specific habits that may be conveyed differently amongst one group versus another. I always find this interesting and slightly dangerous when there is a lack of research and knowledge taken into consideration, particularly for tourists visiting new regions or countries. This class motivated me to learn more about the various cultures, and conduct necessary research when preparing for a trip myself or experiencing a meal with someone from a different background.
