Raquel's Course Reflection:

The Medical Nutrition Therapy Laboratory (Nutrition 407) is a two hour course required specifically for nutrition students completing the Didactic Program in Dietetics. This weekly two hour laboratory section satisfied competencies established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This course overall built on multilevel skills necessary for dietetic practice to assess both nutritional status and for the development of care plans for hospitalized patients.

I found this course to be extremely challenging, particularly when enteral and parenteral nutrition was taught. This information is extremely delicate and crucial for clinical nutrition and the work I want to pursue as a Registered Dietitian. I feel confident that this course was one of the first to strengthen my skills in determining appropriate nutritional care plans for classified patients and their specific conditions. These patients were presented within assigned case studies that I had the opportunity of nutritionally assessmenting. Once this assessment was completed, I discussed my findings in class with my professor and colleagues.

I appreciated that mistakes were both expected and accepted in this class. There was always room to grow and learn, and thanks to Brenda, I felt confident and comfortable with the material. Brenda was a perfect instructor and role model for this class because of her professional and personal experience within clinical settings and her immense knowledge of the subject matter.
